On different occasions, I have heard several people asking what’s the difference between EDP and EDT. How do I know which one to buy?  These combinations of letters appear on some of your favorite fragrances and perfumes, both with perfumes for women and men.

But have you ever stopped to think what the differences are?

However, the smell of a scent itself is of course a huge decision-making factor when buying perfume.

It may be the design of the bottle, the packaging, the reviews, the ‘face’ of the brand, etc. Many factors could come into play when making that ultimate decision to purchase a fragrance.

The actual difference between edt and edp.
The difference between edt and edp

The main difference between EDP and EDT formulas is clear and simple – the concentration.

But what does ‘concentration’ mean? It’s basically the strength of the fragrance. Perfumes with a higher concentration contain more perfume oils and less alcohol, therefore makes the scent last longer.

Generally, an EDT concentration is lower, between 8% and 12%, while an EDP concentration is between 12% and 18%. Although the concentrations of EDT and EDP can vary from brand to brand, or between products. An EDP will always be more concentrated than an EDT.

Eau de Parfum

Having a concentration of about 12% and 18%, EDP usually lasts for around four to five hours making it the perfect scent come evening. Although EDP fragrances contain a higher concentration of alcohol, it’s actually better for sensitive skin than other fragrance types.

Eau de Toilette

Most EDT is cheaper than an EDP due to its typically lower concentration (between 8% and 12%), Lasting normally between two to three hours, EDT is commonly synonymous with daywear whereas EDP would be considered a ‘nightwear’ fragrance.

Fun fact: Eau de Toilette hails from the French term “faire sa toilette” which means getting ready.
